Özet
This study aimed to determine the effect of listening to audiobooks before total knee replacement surgery on patients' blood pressure, pulse rate, and anxiety levels. The study was a randomized controlled experimental study, and the population consisted of patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery at the Orthopedics Clinic of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Training and Research Hospital. The sample consisted of 93 randomized patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the Patient Identification Form, the Patient Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate Findings Form, and the Surgery-Specific Anxiety Scale. The experimental group listened to audiobooks for 20 minutes approximately 40 minutes before surgery. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square analysis, independent samples ttest, and dependent samples t-test were used to evaluate the data. The study found no difference in systolic blood pressure levels between the experimental and control groups after the audiobook application (t=-1.59; p>0.05), however, a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure was observed in the experimental group (t=-2.01; p<0.05). The study also determined that pulse rates decreased significantly in both the experimental (t=4.74; p<0.001) and control (t=3.38; p<0.01) groups at the final test. The mean scores on the Surgery-Specific Anxiety Scale were significantly lower in the experimental group compared to the control group after the audiobook application (t=-2.77; p<0.01). In conclusion, the audiobook application did not create a significant difference in systolic blood pressure between the groups; however, it significantly reduced diastolic blood pressure and surgery-specific anxiety levels in the experimental group. In addition, a significant decrease in heart rate was observed in both groups, suggesting that listening to audiobooks has positive effects, particularly on diastolic blood pressure and anxiety levels.
